The RMCC Company presented a report dedicated to the topic of "Application features of magnesium hydroxide for flue gas cleaning" within scientific and practical conference "Ecology in power generation"5 November 2019
On October 30-31, 2019, JSC «VTI» hosted the International Science and Technology Conference «Ecology in power generation», under which Russian Mining Chemical Company LLC presented its report on the topic: “Application features of magnesium hydroxide for flue gas cleaning”
On October 30-31, JSC «VTI» hosted the International Science and Technology Conference «Ecology in power generation», dedicated to issues of environmental legislation amendments of the Russian Federation and regulations toughening for thermal power stations and marine companies. Changes in legislation will entail new requirements formation for mandatory equipping of enterprises and ships with flue gas treatment plants, which will enable to improve environmental conditions in the country.
The issue has become topical since many EU countries revised environmental legislation to tighten sulfur oxide emission standards, which caused the merchant fleet to be dynamically equipped with flue gas cleaning systems in order to avoid violation of standards that will take legal effect in 2020.
More than 70 specialists of organizations, government officials in charge of energy and environmental issues, as well as employees of specialized companies and research centers from Japan, China, Kazakhstan, Estonia and Malaysia took part in the conference presenting scientific reports.
Within the conference, topical issues related to environmental standards, Russian and foreign environmental practices, specifics of introducing BAT at TPPs, installation of cleaning systems on ships, climate impact of harmful emissions and solving environmental pollution problems were considered.
Then a chief technical specialist Sergei Gusev made a presentation on behalf of RMCC LLC, describing the application features of magnesium hydroxide for flue gas cleaning of ships.
The point is that in shipping, there is currently a 3.5% limit on sulfur content in marine fuel. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is planning to impose global limit on sulfur content of 0.5% from January 1, 2020. Herewith, limits at zones of Emission Control Area (ECA), in which Baltic is included, reach 0.1 % since 1 January 2015. The sulfur level in fuel currently accounts to 3.5% m/m, in accordance with renewed standards it should not exceed 0.10 % m/m. Moreover, restrictions have been imposed on discharged washing water with min. pH 6.5.
According to data received from representatives of shipping companies and independent industry experts, most ships of merchant fleet have already switched or will switch to installation of exhaust gas purification. This is an improved method for cleaning exhaust gases of marine vessels from environmentally harmful impurities.
Currently, several types of scrubbing are distinguished, among which the technology for cleaning flue gases with magnesium hydroxide is applied, where MagTreat® product can be used in suspension form.
Compared with competitive products (hydrated lime, caustic soda, synthetic magnesium hydroxide), natural magnesium hydroxide - MagTreat® has several advantages such as best price, safety and environmental friendliness, non-toxicity.
Thus, MagTreat® is an excellent reagent for cleaning flue gases from sulfur dioxide. Taking into consideration the intensive market growth of ships' exhaust gases desulfurization due to international standards tightening for sulfur content in fuel, magnesium hydroxide can be successfully, since it does not require any additional technologies for implementation.
The MagTreat® reagent has already become widely used and received favorable reviews from large international shipping companies, for example, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) with consumption of about 700 tons of suspension per month.
Representatives of RMCC LLC stand assured of the natural reagent MagTreat® being not only effective and safe tool for solving issues related to cleaning hazardous impurities and improving the environment, but it is also an environmentally friendly product, which plays significant role in current tendency of environmental protection and toxic emissions control.Go to news list
